National Security Commission

Meeting was called to order by Vice Chairman David Scott Sr. at 1:00 p.m.
Roll Call:

The ROTC medal program was discussed and the form used were clarified.  Also all high schools/colleges presented awards last year was gone over per Division, and who had presented them at the schools.  Commission will look into the mailing of commission minutes to each District National Security Chairman, a list was obtain from Frank Prosser, but only eight District Chairman were listed, list needs updated.

Information was handed out on the resolutions from the National Convention and a booklet on Homeland Security preparedness was provided by Nancy Carder, who is the National Security Chairman (National Level from Illinois).  All information was covered.  A pamphlet was provided by Yvonne Dickerson (4th Division) on Homeland Security and Homeland Security for a Business, commission will have Dave Scott (3rd Division) look into getting additional copies.  Also Dave will look into having the pamphlet redone with the Legion emblem on them.

Yvonne Dickerson (4th Division) discuss two emergency preparedness items that her son, an EMT, is implementing within their community.  On your cell phone or line phone (with number storage) you should put the letters ICE (In Case of Emergency) your emergency contact person and the phone number.  This enables Emergency Personnel to be able to contact this person if information is needed.  Also a list of medications and allergies (with your name on the list) should be posted on your refrigerator, for Emergency personnel, this speeded up the treatment time.  They do not have to go thru all the containers looking to see what medications you are on.

Department Commander Myron Kirby & Department Historian Robert Henderson.

Department Commander Kirby talked about his recent visit to Great Lakes Naval Base and on combining of the Navy and the V.A. at the Great Lakes Hospital, also the renaming of this hospital for former astronaut James Lowell.  The combining of the Navy and the V.A. will provide better care and more testing equipment for our Veterans. 
Commander Kirby also discussed the importance of “Just Ask” and how it is working.  There are ads now on Channel 47 for the American Legion and the importance of our programs.
Champaign Post # 24 has a monthly program, were they award a certificate of appreciation to area business who proudly/properly display the American Flag.
He also discussed a change in the 2008 Department Convention in Springfield, the Commander/ President Dinner will be on Saturday night and on Friday night the street between the two hotels (will be closed) and the Illinois/Springfield party will be held.

Next Meeting will be scheduled for April 2008 before the D.E.C. meeting.
